Additional U.S. State Department passport, visa and travel advisory information may be found at www.state.gov/www/services.html

Language
English is spoken on all the Caribbean islands, but you will undoubtedly experience a variety of local patois and creole dialects during your visit.
US Dollars are widely accepted across the Caribbean, along with the local currency. As is the case with any vacation travel, avoid traveling with large amounts of cash. Travelers Checks and Credit/Debit cards are widely accepted at most destinations. You will certainly need cash for purposes of tipping and smaller purchases. The exchange rates, of course, vary from island to island. Currency Exchange desks are typically available at all local airports and the more established hotels. However, if you choose to convert your money to the local currency, be sure to keep your receipt so that you can convert back at the end of your stay.
ATM cards work at most of the major banks. Also, banks usually pay slightly better rates for traveler's cheques than for cash. Currency conversion rates can be found at www.oanda.com
Electricity

Car rental companies operate at virtually all of the local airports, and also from many of the larger hotels. If you plan on renting a car, you may want to consider doing so when you book your trip, and including it as part of your package. An International or US drivers license is typically required, along with a credit card in your name. Some car rental companies will not accept your debit card to rent, but require a credit card in your name.
Remember that on many of the Caribbean islands, driving is on the left-hand side of the road. Visitors may be advised to travel by taxi or local tour buses because navigating local roads can sometimes be a harrowing experience to those not used to local driving customs.

Licensed taxis are readily available at all airports. Some taxis have meters, while other do not. It is always a good idea to agree on a fare before you get in.

Some islands charge a departure tax, which may or may not be included in the price of your airplane ticket. Please verify with the airline before you depart for the Caribbean if there are any additional taxes to be paid.

Safety

As is the case with any vacation travel, avoid traveling to unfamiliar areas without a guide. Most destinations provide guided tours for groups. You may also be able to hire a taxi for a day trip if you desire. Many islands in the Caribbean are virtually crime-free, and the people are generally friendly and helpful. However, use common sense when traveling, and avoid taveling to remote locations, especially without a guide.

Drugs are a universal problem, and visitors to the Caribbean are likely to be offered some type of illegal substance. Local laws are very strict concerning those who sell as well as those who purchase illegal drugs.
